What is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is a specialized exercise-based program that focuses on improving the strength, coordination, and function of the muscles of the mouth, face, tongue, and airway. It helps address issues such as mouth breathing, low tongue posture, tongue thrust, improper swallowing patterns, oral habits, snoring, and other concerns that can impact breathing, sleep, speech, and overall oral function.

Through individualized exercises and habit retraining, myofunctional therapy works to establish healthy breathing, tongue posture, lip seal, and swallowing patterns. By addressing the underlying causes of dysfunction rather than simply managing symptoms, therapy can support improved airway health, better sleep quality, enhanced oral function, and long-term facial and dental development.

The Science Behind Myo

Optimal Nasal Breathing

Nasal breathing filters and humidifies air, reducing inflammation and promoting a more balanced respiratory system.

Proper Tongue Posture

Correcting tongue positioning influences proper jaw development and helps keep the airway open.

Jaw Health

When the tongue and surrounding muscles work properly most experience less jaw pain or dysfunction.

Swallowing

Proper swallowing patterns in the oral-preparatory phase lend to healthy muscle function and digestive wellness.
